Emma signs up for the battle under the name Anna Grey. The identification is real despite her name not really being Anna. It does its job, however, and there isn't a reason to be suspicious. Probably because there is some semblance of truth behind the name.[break][break]

Regardless, as Emma makes her way into the Lilycove gym, she makes little note of the decor or lighting or the fact that the gym is stationed in the epitome of a news organization. She was here for one thing, and then she would leave.[break][break]

Signing up for the challenge proved easy and she waits patiently for the gym leader in question to arrive. At some point she has, in fact, come to appreciate whatever collections might be decorating the waiting room - if there were any. If not, she would be looking out a nearby window, a faraway look in her eye.[break][break]

The gym did not need any decoration for the building was a marvel of beauty itself. Its walls, windows, and hallways were all engraved with ornate patterns reminiscent of Kalosian architecture, but the interiors were touched with more modern fitting. One more thing was that when people used this hall for shooting, furnitures would just be too hassle for workers to move. Simplicity is the fashion of Lilycove Gym.

Selena knew that she had an appointment today, and while it was rare for her to be prepared firsthand, she had been at the lounge waiting for her challenger to arrive. She had her turn observing her before she revealed herself behind the dark-colored shades and summer hat and introduced herself.

“You must be Anna,” she reached her hand out to the stranger... that looked eeriely familiar. “I’m Selena. You challenged my gym today?”

SELENA is idle.

It's an exquisite day outside and she appears to be captivated by it. She'd almost rather be outside enjoying it than cooped up inside the stuffy, marvelously cold building she was in. The lack of decorations was jarring, at least to her. An exaggerated attempt to highlight the beauty of architecture - but no real symbol of familiarity. It smelled like a new building, a place someone might visit only for a moment to take a few aesthetic photos and then immediately leave for the sanctuary of home.[break][break]

It reminded her too much of home, she decided. It's stoic beauty was overwhelming, a glimpse into the life of wealth and pride that she had never taken interest in. With a quiet exhale, Emma glances back over her shoulder just as the young miss Desmarais arrives on scene. The woman offers the pinkette a brief smile in exchange for the handshake. Her own hand reaches out briefly for a fleeting handshake before she separates herself once again.[break][break]

“i'm glad you liked it!” selena responded at her comment with a smile. squinting, the gym leader could not help but feed her own curiosity. “are you from kalos, too? i just thought you looked... familiar.” there was carefulness in the way she picked her words. after all, she was not sure where or when did she exactly meet her. perhaps it was just a mistake? or a convincible lie.[break][break]

Emma's smile is polite as she regards the pink-haired woman. Of course, Selena's squinting brings a look of polite indifference copped out only by the slight raised eyebrow. The woman picks out her words carefully, as if stepping on ice. Emma makes no change to her attitude, she has nothing to hide and nothing to say.[break][break]

"I am, yes. Our region is beautiful, no?"[break][break]

The question is nigh on redundant-- Emma's Kalosian accent is plain as day and beautifully enunciated. But familiar? Possibly, if the other woman had been at the famed contest from hell. 'Anna' had been there as one of the contest participants, after all. If the woman was any good at reporting and interviewing, she probably did recognize her to some extent.[break][break]

Emma dips her head as the gym leader guides her toward the battlefield. Upon arriving she would release both of her Pokemon for the double battle she'd scheduled. [break][break]

it is rare for the pinkette to encounter other kalosians in the region. most of the people she met came from galar—which was not surprising considering the budding relationship between the two regions.[break][break]

“summer days in lilycove bring sunlights like this.” her eyes darted out to the sunlight seeping through the gym hall's ceiling. the place need not any lighting for for the sun is enough to illumate the hall. upon the release of her two pokémons, the gym leader retrieved hers as well. “the only rule is: last pokémon standing wins. but i guess you already know that. don't you? you look experienced enough, anna” she smiled, raising her hand towards her.[break][break]

Emma responds with a smile, glancing up at the sunlight shining down through Selena's spotlight. It warms the fur on her Pokemon's backs, and their muscles roll beneath their skin as they step forward to survey their surroundings.[break][break]

"Aren't gym battles just a different type of beauty contest?"[break][break]

She chuckles as she claps her hands together. Her Pokemon's ears prick at the noise, alert, waiting. Emma spreads her arms, a warm smile spreading across her features.[break][break]

"Set the stage for me, my darlings!"[break][break]

And they follow orders smoothly and without question. The Lycanroc has already locked eyes on his target and greatest threat: the Decidueye. He snarls, snapping teeth as saliva dribbles from his maw. With a taunt, he begins his performance.[break][break]

The dual-type takes the first step, launching himself forward on quick feet. The Skuntank next to him spreads a wide arc of toxic sludge before them, coating the battlefield in its sticky, terrible, foul-smelling doom. She strides forward through it, unfazed. Lycanroc avoids it because his feet never touch the ground. He wields his stone edge as stepping stones, but with every leap he projects the stones toward his opponent: Decidueye.[break][break]

When he lands, the final stone edge beneath him is driven into the ground and he stands on it, poised. The rest begin to fall, granting him safe passage across the ground.[break][break]

Skuntank's final act before their mutual pause in their unique dance is to taunt the Altaria closer, to pick a fight with her, and her alone.[break][break]

when anna's pokémons sprinted from their positions, it signalled both venus and macua to leap off as well, flying in criss-crossing movements before locking down at their enemies when they started taunting.[break][break]

selena's altaria managed to flee from the soiled arena ground but it did not notice the ones lunged into the air. it barely managed to escape the poison from the skuntank but it immediately retaliated with earthquake.[break][break]

as the ground trembled, the dragon hoped to shake off the lycanroc from its stone edge stepping stones, giving the decidueye the opportunity to assume the advantage. upon the hound's rocky strike, decidueye drew the phantasmal arrow (spirit shackle) from its plumage. ghostly chains hit with the intention to wrap its target with before he sent a cyclone of leaf storm, aiming to scratch its body.[break][break]

selena's arms folded with anticipation of her challenger's next move, a wide grin stretched across her face. “what did i say? i knew you were good.”[break][break]

ALTARIA is hit by taunt.[break]

Feathers fly as the two birds take flight. They use the self-stirred wind beneath their wings to their advantage. While the toxic beneath them bubbles and pops, they remain untouched and unaffected-- for now. Emma watches carefully as the birds react in tandem with her own Pokemon. The ground trembles, cracking and tearing beneath their feet. [break][break]

Skuntank, however, is the only one in any real danger. Lycanroc's position on his specific stone edge is compromised, but he manages to stay out of the toxic by countering the earthquake that rips his stone edge apart. Or rather, it falls over. Whatever the case, his raised position fumbles and he leaps to another, throwing the attack back at the Altaria.[break][break]

"Thanks."[break][break]

At the same time this is happening, the Skuntank is retaliating with a sucker punch, moving before the earthquake can at first do harm. The dual-type moves faster than one might expect, aiming to land on the Altaria, or at the very least, hurt it in some way.[break][break]

Mid-leap, it emits a poisonous gas from its pores, magnified by the toxic that drips from the Pokemon's thick fur coat. She reeks.[break][break]

Lycanroc follows up his own attack after being pegged with the leaf storm - having barely dodged the spirit shackle (it had sliced at his pelt but had not trapped him) - with a crunch. He pushes off of his stone edge path and into the air, teeth aiming to clamp down hard on whatever piece of the Decidueye he can put in his mouth.[break][break]

venus understood the power of the skuntank and the threat it posed once poison seeped through its plumage. and yet all she had to do was to dodge it a little bit more until she could not outspeed the skunk. counter was the first one to connect, striking the dragon with the same intensity as the earthquake she produced. then sucker punch and poison gas followed; venus was hit by the dashing skuntank but managed to fly away as the venomous air attempted to crawl through its feathers.[break][break]

altaria winced from the pain but endured the ordeal as she readied herelf for a shrieking sound of her disarming voice, beams of vibration targeting all the opponents and all the inanimate objects jutting out on the field.[break][break]

macua, however, was the unlucky one. he did not notice the poison billowing on his direction as he braced himself for the incoming attack of the lycanroc. the hound's fangs punctured through its flesh, but it was all the distance to make a critical hit. with a flap of its wings, they were both surrounded by a gust of leaf storm, front blades slashing inside through the rock-pokemon's skin as the ghost owl returned the bite, giga draining a hefty amount of energy from the enemy.[break][break]

ALTARIA is hit by counter, sucker punch. they deal normal damage.[break]
ALTARIA dodges poison gas, uses DISARMING VOICE (against skuntank, lycanroc, and the stone edge platforms on the ground).[break]

Skuntank falls to the ground, her nails clawing the rough terrain as her toxic trail seeps between her paw pads. Unfortunately, she is not prepared to face the disarming voice that beats her into the ground. She cowers beneath it, and the pool of her prior toxic is dispelled at her feet. Nearby, the voice is loud enough and powerful enough to smash through some of the stone edge platforms.[break][break]

But not before Lycanroc is able to shift his weight and rebalance.[break][break]

The voice throws him off-guard as well, to an extent, but not nearly to the same effect that his partner is suffering from. He recovers quickly, preparing himself for the incoming damage from the Decidueye's leaf storm and giga drain.[break][break]

In the space that Skuntank's poison has been driven back, it provides a moment of sanctuary for the Lycanroc. While he runs for it, skimming over the crumbling rocks to make it to the open space, Skuntank has shuffled off, remaining nearby to act as her partner's defense.[break][break]

Of course, in the process, the Lycanroc is torn at with the leaves that fly his way. They bite, but he brushes them off with gritted teeth.[break][break]

From the sidelines, Emma watches carefully, memorizing their movements as the pair move in unison. Together, they were stronger, it seemed. Interesting.[break][break]

Because the moment the Decidueye opts to sap back it's strength with a giga drain, the Skuntank reinstates their earlier taunt, encouraging the Decidueye to target her, instead (not that it matters necessarily, because Lycanroc was right behind her). Regardless, she follows up with a toxic once again, hopefully contaminating the giga drain with a mouthful of harmful poison rather than their life-giving essence.[break][break]

Lycanroc, now with a chance to breathe, aims an uprooted stone edge across the field in a line, aiming for the Altaria. [break][break]

notes: skuntank and lycanroc are both damaged by disarming voice. it clears away the poison beneath skuntank's feet and reduces several stone edge platforms to rubble. lycanroc runs for skuntank while he is hit by leaf storm. skuntank draws the attention of decidueye (possibly) with a taunt, followed up with a toxic to combat the giga drain. lycanroc attacks altaria with stone edge.

team dynamics was always the element that made each pairing unique and each trainer's skill differ. it was what the challengers were trying to prove, but decidueye and altaria were not going to give up without showing their capability to harmonize too.[break][break]

at point zero, decidueye's eyes locked in with skuntank's, disregarding the pang of poison he seeped out from its body as it flushed poison into the giga drain. the skunk's attack aggravated the macua's ill condition, but it did not stop the owl from retaliating.[break][break]

“macua! tie the skuntank once more!” with glaring eyes, decidueye launched another spirit shackle from its plumage. ghostly arrow was drawn from his feathers, lunging at its target with ghostly wisps.[break][break]

venus, on the other hand, endured the incoming stone edge, barely knocking her to the ground.[break][break]

“venus, knock them down and lunge at lycanroc!” golden body covered in dirt shimmered with purple glow before she flapped her wings, causing another earthquake. destabilizing both pokemons, she swooped towards the lycanroc with glistening steel wings, aiming to crash at the hound's bouldered mane.[break][break]

DECIDUEYE is poisoned and it deals damage.[break]

And the great, lumbering, heavyset old Skuntank is tied to the floor - willingly, likely. She was not here for mobility or agility, that was Hades' job. She was his muse, his partner, his assigned back up. When he needed a shield, her thick fur and thicker hide would be it.[break][break]

In fact, the damage dealt from the ghostly arrow pinning her spirit to the ground was negligible. [break][break]

The following earthquake proves dangerous, encouraging Hades to respond defensively at first. The Pokemon throws up a quick protect, an attempt to deflect or negate at least some of the pain. His snarls of pain prove otherwise. However, it gives him a chance to slow himself down, to prepare for the Altaria's incoming steel wing.[break][break]

That, the beast meets head on. Where her metal wing slams against his mane, crushing rocks to rubble and dealing great damage, he latches on with a crunch, coupling it with a stone edge again, and again, from his mane. The shrapnel in his mane aims to pierce, to strike down, to finish this fight.[break][break]

And Skuntank, still stitched to the ground, absorbs the pain from the earthquake beneath her feet. She retaliates with a night slash against the Decidueye. [break][break]

both of selena's pokemons were already at the precipice but neither was going away without giving all their best.[break][break]

“macua, support venus!”[break][break]

the pain was now visible in the eyes and body of her decidueye, his plumage becoming tainted by the familiar hue of poison. the skuntank's night slash certainly did not help his condition to be better, but instead it made him mnore persistent, more eager to win (overgrow).[break][break]

as the pinkette's altaria endured through the ordeal set upon her by the challenger's lycanroc, crunching and stabbing through her body, it was venus's turn to finally return the favor. after screeching a disarming voice into the air, the impact from the stone edge made her body shimmer as the stones stabbing her body began to turn into the perpetrator's direction.[break][break]

mirror move locked the hound to the altaria's side while macua immediately flew to venus's cide, hitting the rock-type with a powered leaf storm.[break][break]
